Mercedes-Benz w124 Chassis

For over a decade, the Mercedes-Benz w124 chassis was used in Mercedes’ E-Class cars. Many classic cars dating from the mid 1980s to mid 1990s have the w124 chassis in the vehicle. It’s present in all coupe, sedans, or cabriolet. If you observe cars made during that decade, you will see a familiar appearance between E-Class vehicles from having the same frame. What makes this chassis unique is that it’s designed to endure high mileages and has a reputation for reliability.

The w124 chassis was the successor of the w123 and was redesigned to be lighter in weight and feature a more favorable aerodynamic body.  Another goal of redesigning the form is so that it would be more fuel efficient. If there was one noticeable difference on the w124 body, it would be the infamous panoramic windshield wiper where contrary to traditional vehicles, the car only has one windshield wiper locked down the middle of the windshield. The idea was to provide a broader wiping range.

Considering new braking technology, handling, and revamped diesel motors, one can see why the w124 was a breakthrough in automobile technology during the 1980s and 1990s. At the time of release, the w124 caused quite a stir in the automobile industry that to this day, many desire to own a Mercedes-Benz with this particular chassis as a collector vehicle.  Numerous luxury car collectors argue that this was the best car ever made. Others would argue that it’s the best car they’ve ever driven. At the time of halting retirement, 2.7 million units of the w124 body were produced.
